Peter Driftmier

Registered Social Worker (He/Him)

Get to Know Peter

I offer a down-to-earth therapy experience that goes at your pace, whether you want to rapidly process a distressing experience or ease in slowly. Many of my clients choose me for help with trauma, life transitions, exploring grief, or gaining momentum in managing anxiety or substance use concerns. I hold a firm belief that all my clients come into therapy doing the best that they can with the tools they have. My hope is that during our work together, you feel heard, understood, and respected for who you are and how you want to move forward. Ultimately, I want our therapy work to help you build a rich and meaningful life and for you to be able to do what truly matters to you even in the face of trying circumstances.

I tailor my approach to your needs and your preferences. I avoid prescribing quick or simple solutions; tools and strategies you take home and the work we do should honour your story and the reality of what challenges you’re facing. Some of the approaches I use include: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). These are research-backed strategies that use eye movement to reprocess traumatic or challenging events (past, present, or even imagined in the future) in order to reduce emotional distress when you face circumstances that previously triggered you.

About Peter’s Practice

What is your training?

I hold a Masters degree in Social Work with a clinical specialization. I am trained in EMDR, ART, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, and Narrative Therapy. I have received additional training in CBT and DBT.

I work with individuals, from teenagers and young adults, all the way to seniors. Many of my clients are men and folks from the queer and trans communities. I especially appreciate connection with clients across cultural divides.
My areas of focus include:

  • Men’s Issues: relationships, sexuality, emotional regulation, loneliness, evolving roles & identity
  • Substance or Behavioral Challenges: alcohol, drugs, compulsive behaviors, gaming, gambling
  • Grief & Loss: death, relationship endings, complex or disenfranchised losses
  • Trauma & Attachment: abuse, PTSD, codependency, unsafe relationships, vicarious trauma
  • Identity Exploration: discovering your truest self, values, and life direction
  • Stress & Emotional Health: anxiety, depression, anger, burnout, self-esteem, perfectionism, emotional regulation, guilt & shame
  • Life Transitions: career change, school transitions, relationship endings, chronic illness

You might notice that several of these categories might apply for you, and this is not a coincidence. There is significant overlap between my areas of practice. For example, the experience of grief can involve life transition or trauma, and substance use can involve grief or attachment challenges.
I became a therapist in my mid-30s after years of community work, labor, and kitchen jobs. It felt like the right path for me, a calling I couldn’t ignore. I had also been a therapy client myself, which gave me a deep appreciation for what it’s like to be seen, heard, and supported.

Growing up, I received messages about being a man that made it harder to connect with my emotions, needs, and values. Life’s challenges—losses, relationships, family struggles, and trauma—taught me how important therapy can be for growth, healing, and self-understanding.

Being with someone as they navigate life’s challenges is a privilege I never take for granted. I think it’s fair to say that there’s nothing you could tell me that would throw me off from being present for you.
I am available day times Monday and Thursday and evenings on Wednesday.

Fees for counselling are $200 per hour. A therapy hour is considered 50 minutes. My 75-minute sessions (typical for EMDR or ART) are $300. I am available for a free 15-minute virtual meet and greet for you to determine if we’re a good fit. Please see our fees section for more details.
