COUPLES COUNSELLING

Romantic relationships are hard work, but they can also be very fulfilling – sometimes, we are able to navigate the work of relationships on our own.

However, sometimes we need the support of a professional to help us work through challenging times.

Couples counselling can help you gain insight into relational patterns, resolve conflict, improve connection and intimacy, and increase relationship satisfaction.

A romantic relationship has the potential to be a fulfilling, supportive, and comforting part of life. We’re here to help you get there.

Couples and Marriage Counselling Methods

At Monarch Psychology, we believe that helping our clients means exploring and exposing core issues instead of simply addressing symptoms.

Although there are many challenges within relationships, such as communication issues, conflict, infidelity, separation, and loss of connection and intimacy, we focus on identifying the underlying dynamics that are contributing to issues between

couples. From there, we can determine the best couples and marriage counselling methods to meet your unique needs.

We can also support you with navigating major life changes and challenges such as becoming parents, dealing with a loss, navigating an illness, or retirement.

By offering a safe and supportive space, we can help you feel heard and allow you to explore your relationship challenges.

We will create a roadmap to help you on your journey, using the most appropriate couples and marriage counselling methods for your situation.

Some of these methods include:

  • Reflective Listening: A beneficial form of therapy that helps partners work on their communication skills by taking turns being an active listener.
  • Emption Focused Therapy: EFT helps to shift negative relationship patterns through building a more secure attachment between partners.
  • Gottman Method: The Gottman method helps couples create a deeper understanding of each other by giving partners specific problem-solving skills to enhance their connection and intimacy.
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: CBT focuses on identifying underlying thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours that are contributing to problematic patterns in a relationship, in order to develop more effective ways of relating.

At Monarch Psychology, we use evidence-based methods to successfully facilitate growth and healing in relationships. Our therapists are trained in multiple methods of therapy and can integrate aspects from each based on the needs of each couple.

What to Expect in Couples Counselling

Ideally, all members of a couple should be open to participating in couples counselling, but we understand that is not always the case.

If your partner is hesitant to seek couples counselling or is not open to it at all, you can also opt to do couples therapy or individual therapy alone in order to better understand your relationship and the ways you can improve it.

However, if you and your partner attend couples counselling together, you can expect your therapist to help you learn and practice the tools that will help you achieve a more fulfilling relationship.

Your therapist is also there to show you that disagreement and conflict need not be destructive to your relationship. . They will help you and your partner figure out where your challenges lie and how you can deal with conflict productively.

A couples counsellor will help you get to know your and your partner’s respective needs, personalities, and triggers in order to deeply understand the nature of your relationship and how each partner impacts the dynamics of the relationship.

Couples therapy is not for people involved in an abusive relationship. If you are involved in an abusive relationship, please seek individual counselling and immediate support if you are at risk.
